Considering
Adoption?

Adoption is a brave and loving choice. Today's adoption process gives you more control than you might think.

Types of Adoption

Open Adoption

  • Ongoing contact with the adoptive family
  • May include visits, calls, and updates
  • You and the adoptive family agree on the level of contact
  • Most popular choice today

Semi-Open Adoption

  • Communication through the adoption agency
  • Letters, photos, and updates may be exchanged
  • Identities may or may not be shared
  • Offers a balance of connection and privacy

Closed Adoption

  • No identifying information is shared
  • No ongoing contact between families
  • Records are sealed
  • Provides the most privacy

What You Should Know

  • You choose the adoptive family. You can review profiles and select the family that feels right for your child.
  • Medical and living expenses are often covered. Many adoption agencies and adoptive families help cover pregnancy-related costs.
  • Counseling and support are provided throughout. You'll have access to emotional support before, during, and after placement.
  • You can change your mind before finalization. No decision is final until legal paperwork is signed after birth.
  • Birth fathers have rights too. The birth father's legal rights are considered in the adoption process.

Common Concerns

"Will my child know I loved them?"

Yes. Choosing adoption is one of the most selfless acts of love. Many birth mothers write letters to their children, and in open adoptions, you can be part of their life and they will always know the love behind your decision.

"What if I change my mind?"

You have every right to change your mind at any point before the legal finalization of the adoption. No one can force you to place your child for adoption. Your adoption counselor will make sure you understand every step of the process.

"Who pays for everything?"

In most cases, the adoptive family or adoption agency covers medical expenses, legal fees, and sometimes living expenses during your pregnancy. You should never have to pay to place your child for adoption.
