Abortion
Information

Before making any decision, it's important to have accurate information. We provide a safe, confidential space to learn about all your options—including what abortion involves.

Before Considering Abortion

If you're thinking about abortion, getting an ultrasound first is an important step. An ultrasound provides essential medical information that affects your options:

  • Confirms a viable pregnancy — Approximately 20% of known pregnancies end in natural miscarriage. An ultrasound confirms whether the pregnancy is viable, which could change your next steps entirely.
  • Confirms gestational age — How far along you are determines which abortion procedures are available. This is information you need no matter what you decide.
  • Rules out ectopic pregnancy — An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus. This is a medical emergency that requires different treatment—not an abortion procedure.

We offer free ultrasounds so you can have this important information before making any decision.

Types of Abortion Procedures

Medical/Chemical Abortion (Abortion Pill)

Medical abortion uses two medications, typically used up to 10 weeks of pregnancy:

  • Mifepristone — The first medication blocks progesterone, a hormone needed to sustain the pregnancy.
  • Misoprostol — Taken 24-48 hours later, this medication causes contractions to expel the pregnancy from the uterus.

Possible side effects and risks include:

  • Heavy bleeding and cramping
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever
  • Incomplete abortion requiring additional medical intervention
  • Infection

Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion procedures vary depending on gestational age:

  • Aspiration (Suction) Abortion — Typically performed up to 14-16 weeks. A suction device is used to remove the pregnancy from the uterus.
  • Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) — Generally performed after 14-16 weeks. The cervix is dilated and surgical instruments along with suction are used to remove the pregnancy.

Both procedures are performed in a clinical setting. The specific procedure recommended depends on how far along the pregnancy is.

Potential Risks

Physical Risks

As with any medical procedure, abortion carries potential risks, including:

  • Heavy or prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Incomplete abortion (requiring additional procedures)
  • Uterine perforation or damage to the cervix

Emotional Effects

Women experience a wide range of emotions after an abortion. These can include:

  • Grief or a sense of loss
